I’m Charlie Sokolov, and for over a year, I’ve helped families find their perfect home with Braustin Homes. But nothing prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster of buying a home myself. I always thought I understood what our customers went through-until I became one.
Owning a home with land for my horses has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I didn’t know where it would be or what it would look like, but I always pictured a place where horses roamed in the backyard and dogs played out front. Now, walking the property with my fiancé Jason, I see that dream coming to life: the driveway winding up to the house, a big tree marking the start of our backyard, the horse shelter ready, and open space for all our animals.
Growing up in San Antonio with a single mom who always made things happen, I learned to dream big and work hard. My mom supported every wild ambition I had-horses, 4H, FFA, even the Olympics. She sacrificed so much for me, and standing here today, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. “You did it, Charlie,” I tell myself, and I know I owe so much of it to her.
When Jason and I started our search, we needed a home with space-at least three bedrooms, an office for Jason, and room for our three horses, three dogs, and a small flock of backyard chickens. We wanted something affordable, customizable, and truly ours. As a housing consultant here at Braustin Homes, I understood that our home search streamlined the experience for our customers, but once I became the customer myself, I realized the process was so much more flexible than I expected! What surprised me most was how similar my experience was to many of my customers. I’ve worked with families like the Leal’s, who hit roadblocks with financing and had to pause and reassess. I found myself in the same spot, doubting if it would work out, until Jason pushed me to try-just like I encourage my customers. That leap of faith paid off!
The customization process was a dream. With Braustin, we picked the floor plan, the home’s position, the driveway-details you rarely get to choose with site-built homes. We prepared the land, coordinated utilities, and worked with an incredible team (shoutout to Cody for keeping everything on track). The day we brought our horses onto the property, it all felt real. For the first time in years, life slowed down. There’s a peace and quiet here that fills me up every morning when I look out and see my ponies right outside my window.
Going through this journey myself has made me a better housing consultant. Now, I truly understand the emotions, the doubts, and the excitement our customers feel. I know what it’s like to take a chance, to trust the process, and to finally step into a home that’s truly yours.
